NEW: Lady Whitworth (Rebecca Front)

Meet the Mom: Reverend Osbourne Whitworth may suck the toes of prostitutes, but this season, you’ll meet the woman who suckled him in his infancy: Lady Whitworth. That’s right, even Ossie has a mother, and once you meet the ghastly woman, you will understand all.

As Seen In: MASTERPIECE Mystery! fans will rejoice in Rebecca Front’s return to MASTERPIECE. Not only was she the consummate boss as Chief Superintendent Jean Innocent in Inspector Lewis; she also embodied the both painful and delightful flibbertigibbet Mrs. Bennet in Death Comes to Pemberley.

NEW: Monk Adderley (Max Bennett)

More Adder than Monk: Poldark’s newest villain—ally to George, antagonist to Ross—is a dangerous mix of charm and smarm. He’s an infamous dueler and a notorious rake, and his indolent attitude toward his MP seat makes him a natural nemesis for our noble hero. And, he gets some of the best—albeit creepiest—lines. Stay tuned!

Costume / Drama No stranger to the costume drama, Bennett has appeared in feature films The Duchess and Anna Karenina, and the edgy Shakespeare TV drama Will. For Poldark, Bennett reveals that Adderley is less foppish and more elegant than his character in the original TV series. And in a departure from the Monk Adderley of Winston Graham’s books, he—mercifully—will not have a metal plate in his head.

RECAST: Geoffrey Charles (Louis Davison)

Smells Like Teen Spirit: A chip off the old Francis Poldark block, Geoffrey Charles is older but not wiser, dabbling in some of London society’s less wholesome activities like drinking and gambling. Will he continue to dabble in our favorite of his activities, ie trolling a certain George Warleggan? Tune in to find out!

Passing the Torch: For Season 4, Poldark needed an older actor to fill actor Harry Marcus’ now-larger shoes. Enter Louis Davison, who made his stage debut at age 14 with Martin Freeman (Sherlock) in Richard III in the West End. The son of actor Peter Davison (Doctor Who’s Fifth Doctor, among many other things) and brother-in-law of actor David Tennant (the Tenth Doctor), Davison was in the 2016 film Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children.

Bonus: Upon Poldark‘s twitter announcement of Davison’s casting, Harry Marcus, the original Geoffrey Charles, tweeted, “A massive well done to Louis Davison the new GC! Give George hell you are going to have so much fun!”

REMEMBER: Rosina Hoblyn (Amelia Clarkson)

It’s time to brush up on some of Poldark’s lesser-seen characters who may or may not be instrumental in Season 4’s drama. Starting off the trip down memory lane is Cornish rose Rosina Hoblyn, she of the “lipsy leg.” When last seen in Season 2, Rosina had a wee crush on Doctor Dwight who, back in his bachelor days, could rob a corpse, cure scurvy, and fix a torn ACL all in a day’s work. Rosina’s boorish father Jacka is a fearsome tyrant…Is there hope that she might find a man worthy of her sweet nature?

REMEMBER: Rowella Chenowyth (Esme Coy)

Artless and innocent on the outside, Morwenna’s scheming seductress of a sister, when last we saw her, had extracted £500 from Ossie keep quiet about her pregnancy. And a very convenient pregnancy, indeed! Blackmail complete, she is free to keep her shoes on and marry her red-headed librarian.

REMEMBER: Sir Francis Bassett (John Hopkins) / Lord Falmouth (James Wilby)

These dueling Cornwall powerbrokers are on the opposite side of every issue. In a sitcom, they’d be roommates! But in Poldark, Sir Francis Basset lives in Tahiti Tehidy. There, he advocates for 18th century social justice and attempted to anoint Ross as his agent of change. When that didn’t work out, he settled for George Warleggan as his candidate for Truro’s MP.

Lord Falmouth, on the other hand, is an enemy of change who thinks the common man should leave governance (and rights) to the aristocracy. More closely ideologically aligned to George, he nevertheless hates him. We get it. But he does have one thing going for him: he’s the uncle of Hugh Armitage.
