Five people were shot Tuesday night at Morgan State University in Baltimore, in what police initially called an “active shooter” situation.
The victims, four men and one woman, were aged 18 to 22 and had non-life-threatening injuries, Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley said at a news conference.
Worley did not comment on the number of possible shooters, and said there were no immediate arrests.
Four of the five victims were students, according to the Morgan State University police chief.
The university’s president, David Wilson, said all classes would be canceled Wednesday.
Mayor Brandon Scott said Baltimore’s “heart aches.”
“We are a city that has actually seen a decrease in homicides. But tonight that doesn’t matter,” he added.
As of 11:45 p.m., police said they no longer considered the incident an “active shooter” situation but urged people to shelter in place. A half-hour later, Morgan State announced on its website that the shelter-in-place order had been lifted.

Police indicated that the situation was centered in the 1700 block of Argonne Drive. The address is that of a residential complex about five miles northeast of Baltimore’s Inner Harbor.
The university said in a message on social media at 10:19 p.m. that “an active investigation” was underway “related to a report of shots being fired on or near campus.”
Baltimore City Council member Ryan Dorsey urged people to stay clear of the area.
Just received a call from BPD about a shooting at the Morgan campus. Five victims, none critical.
It’s believed there were three shooters firing into the crowd, none apprehended or ID’d at this time.
Please stay clear of the area.

The historically Black university has more than 9,000 students this semester, The Washington Post reported in August, and it can house about 2,600 people. The school describes itself on its website as among the nation’s most diverse Historically Black Colleges and Universities, and the largest in Maryland.
